What is Educating Edgar?
Gentle letter games for children aged about 3 to 7. Nothing in the games needs reading: a voice says each letter and instruction. There are three games:
- Letter Pairs: match each little letter to its big letter, by dragging it or by tapping one and then the other.
- Sound Hunt: the voice says "Find the letter B" and your child taps the right card.
- Letter Pop: letter bubbles float up; your child pops the letter the voice asks for.
There are no timers, lives or scores to lose. A wrong answer gets a gentle wiggle and "try again".
How do I open the grown-ups corner?
On the home screen, press and hold the faded gear in the top right corner for 3 seconds (a ring fills up). The hold stops children opening it by accident.
There you can choose which letters to practise, whether Sound Hunt shows big or little letters, turn sound on or off, set the voice volume and see progress.
Which letters does it start with?
By default the games use s a t p i n, the first group in a common phonics teaching order. You can pick the next groups, or all letters a to z, in the grown-ups corner. The voice says letter names (for example "S"), not letter sounds.
How do I install it on an iPad or iPhone?
Open educatingedgar.com in Safari, tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. It then opens full screen from its own icon.
How do I install it on Android?
Open educatingedgar.com in Chrome, open the menu (⋮) and choose Install app or Add to Home screen. We haven't tested it on an Android device yet, so please tell us how it goes.
Does it work offline?
Yes, the games do. Once the app has loaded online, the games, voices and letters are saved on the device, so they work without the internet. This help page and the feedback form need the internet.
There's no sound. What can I do?
- Check the device volume.
- Open the grown-ups corner and check that Sound on is ticked and the voice volume isn't too low.
- On iPad and iPhone, sound starts after the first touch on the screen. That's an Apple rule for web pages.
Where is my child's progress kept?
Only on the device, in the browser's storage. There are no accounts and progress isn't sent anywhere. You can reset it in the grown-ups corner. Removing the app or clearing the website data also removes it.
How do I get the newest version?
Updates download automatically when the app is opened while online. Close it and open it again to see the newest version.
Who made the voice and the letters?
The voice is by Grok (xAI, voice "Rigel"). The letters use the Edu NSW ACT Foundation font (SIL Open Font License).
